There’s no doubt that Overwatch is one of the greatest games of all times.
Back then in 2016, the game was so popular that its developers Blizzard Entertainment made $1 Billion in revenue from the single game alone.
This is really great feat for the developers and till now they have been releasing regular updates from time to time.
Major updates have been released that improved the game’s graphics, playability, additional characters, character improvements, newer environments, additional weapons and so on.
However, no matter how much the game gets updated or even how popular it is now or how many players still play it, you are bound to get bored or you might want to try something new.
Hence why, in this article I’ve mentioned games that are similar yet quite different from Overwatch.
Note: Most of you might expect this list to include to Team Fortress 2. However that game was released in 2007, with major update in 2011, which still leads to an outdated graphic. That’s why I haven’t included Team Fortress 2 in this list.
1. Paladins: Champions of the Realm
Just like Overwatch, Paladins is a First-Person and Third-Person shooter game that has hints of MOBA (Mulitplayer Online Battle Arena).
Gameplay wise, it is similar to Overwatch, with most critics and beta testers criticized it to be a rip-off of Overwatch.
However, once you start playing the game, you realize that Paladins is a unique game of its own.
Though it has character, weapons and customizations similar to Overwatch, but Paladins: Champions of the Realm focuses in customizing characters via its ‘Cards’ system.
Additionally, at a point where Overwatch is a rampant run-and-gun game, Paladins focuses more on strategy and comparatively has a slower pace.
On the other hand, where Overwatch focuses on smaller maps, maps in Paladins are larger and requires a bit of roaming around that helps a person to invest mentally within the game.
The best part is, you do not need a powerful system to play Paladins, but if you want to enjoy it the max, check few good options here.
Developed by Hi-Rez Studios, the game is now Free-to-Play and is considered of the eerily similar alternative to Overwatch.
2. Dirty Bomb
Dirty Bomb is a secret Free-to-Play Game that has been slowly gaining popularity from people who are looking for Overwatch alternatives.
Developed by Splash Damage, on its release the game received positive and mixed reactions from critics and users, but that shouldn’t stop you from playing this game.
Set in London, England, the game’s plot revolves around explosion of an atomic bomb that is causing contamination of toxic gas and city has been evacuated.
The government has a setup a team of mercenaries to reduce the radiation and cover up the incident, whereas on the other hand a team of terrorist wants to stop the government set-up mercenaries and capture the technology required to maintain the contaminated gas.
This results in the government set-up mercenaries, called as Central Disaster Authority to go up against the terrorists and time; that is against them.
Coming from Overwatch, this game may not appeal to some people, but being a First-Person Shooter Multiplayer game, there is a lot to like about it.
Warframe is one of my favorite games in this list.
Just like Overwatch, it has multiple characters that have multiple weapons, but that is where the similarity stops.
That is because, Warframe has an excellent back story behind it and set in far future, where the warriors from Tenno race have woken from a cryosleep and found themselves being at war with Grineer, which are human clones built using metal and blood.
This results in characters looking far different that what you’ve seen in Overwatch and the gameplay looks like scenes from a Sci-fi movie.
Being a free-to-play and Third Person Shooter game, it is shocking to see the kind of graphics you see on Warframe, it is totally different from Overwatch and has hi-res graphics that we’re used to seeing in games that take years and years to develop.
However, unlike Overwatch, Warframe requires great co-ordination within the team and tight team play to win over your opponents.
4. Blacklight: Retribution
A sequel to Blacklight: Tango Down, the Blacklight: Retribution is set in cyberpunk futuristic world that is bound to pump up your adrenaline at all cost.
It’s a Free-to-play First-Person Shooter game and just like Overwatch; depends on a multiplayer gameplay.
Unlike other games mentioned above; Blacklight: Retribution doesn’t involve duel between two teams. Mostly the gameplay is similar to Left 4 Dead, where a team has to go on a shooting spree on Zombies and other brain-dead creatures.
There are multiple and modern weapons in Blacklight: Retribution with different game types like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination, King of the Hill, Kill Confirmed and so on.
Once you start playing the game, you’ll realize that a lot of effort has been put into Blacklight: Retribution and you’ll enjoy its adrenaline-inducing gameplay.
5. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is completely different game compared to Overwatch. While the above two games were set in futuristic environment, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is set in 1961 in a hypothetical storyline where Nazis are victorious in World War II.
The story revolves around the game’s protagonist Willian “B.J.” Blazkowicz, and his attempt to fight against the victorious Nazi regime in America.
To be honest, this is a first-person shooter but is nowhere similar or related to Overwatch, but in case you enjoy shooting games in a serious environment and high quality graphics, this game is meant for you.
The game received mostly positive reviews from critics and users alike, with most of them rating it 9/10.
Developed by MachineGames, the game is available on Windows, PS4, Xbox and Nintendo Switch; this is one game you shouldn’t miss.
Hope you like these alternatives of overwatch..
