Partitioning hard drives in Windows 10 is very easy. You can partition drives without using any software. All the necessary things are available on Windows and you need to use them to create a new partition in Windows. A new drive’s storage space isn’t divided into partitions in most of the cases. If you’ve bought a new Drive, your drive might not be divided into partitions. Windows is installed on C: drive by default. If you’re saving all your data in C: drive, it might be at risk. As when we install a new copy of Windows, most of the times we’ve to format the drive where windows will be installed. So, it’s wise to save all your data on other drives rather than saving it in C: drive. So, if your C: drive is the only drive available with all the storage space, partition your hard drive into parts.
Many software is available in the market which is used to create a new partition. But in this article, we’ll be showing you to partition hard drive in WIndows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7 without using any software. All you need is Administrator account access and some inbuilt tools. The tools we’ll be using are available on Windows. There’s no need to download any tool/software. You can do this with Disk Management tool and CMD which. Disk Management tool is the tool available in Windows with GUI interface. In CMD we’ll be using Dispart which can be used to partition a hard drive but we need to put commands. These two things can be used to partition or create a new partition in any version of Windows OS.
Users can create a new partition of any size they want. Follow the methods given below. All the methods are explained with steps and pictures:

We’ll be showing you two methods to create a new volume the n hard drive. Both the methods are very simple and easy to follow. Just follow each step as shown below and create a new partition on your hard drive.
Method 1. Using Disk Management Tool
Disk Management tool is the preloaded tool in Windows which is used to manage the storage space like a hard drive, external storage etc. This tool is used to create or extend the size of partitions on Windows. Follow the steps given below:
Step 1. Open Disk Management tool. There are two ways to open Disk Management Tool. Open your Control Panel by pressing Win+R and type Control Panel, now, search for Disk Management and open the option Create and Format Hard Disk Partition.
You can even open control panel by pressing Win+R then type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. This will open Disk management tool for you. For Windows 8 users and above, press Win+X and select Disk Management.
Step 2. Once Disk Management is open, you’ll get the list of all the Disk Partition and drives connected to your system. Right click on the biggest partition or the partition from where you need to take the space and want to create a new partition. Then click on the option Shrink Volume. This option will give you the amount of all the free space and amount which can be used to create a new volume in Windows 10 or any version of Windows.
Step 3. Once you’ve clicked on Shrink Volume, it’ll take some time in order to calculate all the free space. Then enter the amount of data to be shrunk in MB. Remember 1024MB=1GB. So better calculating the space you need in your new volume and click Shrink.
Step 4. When you click on Shrink, it’ll take some. After the process is complete, you’ll get the new unallocated space generated according to the amount of size you shrank. Then Right Click on unallocated volume and select New Simple Volume.
Step 5. Now, select Next, and then you need to select the Letter that will be assigned to the New Drive. You can select any letter like D, E, F according to your choice and click Next.
Step 6. After this select Format The Partition and put the name to the New Drive which will be created. You can put Movies, Songs or whatever. It can be changed once new volume is created. Make sure you’ve selected NTFS format, alternatively you can select any format you want. Click on Next and wait for some time.
Once you click on Next, it’ll take some time to create new partition on your hard drive. Open file explorer to check new volume. This method works best to partition hard drive in Windows 10, Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 7, Windows XP.
If you don’t want to use Disk Management tool to create or partition hard drive, you can use CMD. CMD can be used to create new partition. We’ll be using diskpart to create new partition using CMD in Windows.
Partition Hard Drive Using CMD In Windows 10, Windows 8, 8.1, Windows 7
CMD (Command Prompt) can be used to do many things on any Windows OS. We’ll be using CMD with diskpart to create new volume. Make sure you’ve followed each step carefully. Also, you should have administrator account access in order to use dispart. Follow the steps given below:
Step 1. Press Win+R and type diskpart and hit enter. Give it administrator privileges access if it asks.
Step 2. Wait till diskpart is launched successfully. Now, type list disk. This will give you the list of all the drives that are connected to your computer.
Step 3. Type select disk 0 (Replace 0 with your drive’s number0 and hit enter.
Step 4. Now, type create partition primary size=61440. Replace 61440 with the size you want to give to new partition. Remember 1024MB=1GB.
Step 5. We need to assign a new letter to our newly created partition. So, type assign letter=H and hit enter. Then again type assign and hit enter. You should see your hard drive in file explorer. It’s newly partitioned space from your hard drive.
So these simple steps allow you to create a new partition of hard drive easily. If you don’t want to use disk management tool to create new partition in Windows, you can use CMD. It’s simple and easy to create hard drive partition using CMD. All you need to do is just put few commands in CMD and all is done.
